Charcoal: Purify, Don’t Punish

By Aida BicajOctober 22, 20263 min read

I have always loved materials that are simple but can do many things. Charcoal is one of them.

Artists have worked with charcoal for centuries. It can make the finest line or a deep shadow. It can be softened, moved, layered, even lifted away again to bring light back into a drawing.

I think about skin in a similar way. We are always looking at what to add, what to take away, and when to leave it alone.

Purification should be thoughtful

When skin feels congested or dull, our instinct is often to attack it. More exfoliation. More cleansing. More drying.

I don’t believe in this.

Purifying the skin should be thoughtful. The goal is to remove what is sitting on the surface and what the skin no longer needs without taking away the things that keep it comfortable, balanced and healthy.

Charcoal can be a wonderful part of this when it is used in the right formula, at the right moment.

Charcoal for every day

One of my favorite ways to bring charcoal into a regular routine is through cleansing.

Mansard Gel Moussant Vegetale combines vegetal charcoal with sage in a soft foaming cleanser designed to remove makeup, impurities, excess oil and the pollution that collects on the skin throughout the day.

I reach for it when you want the skin to feel truly clean and fresh, but you still want to treat it gently.

It is also a cleanser I often recommend for men and for skin that is regularly shaved. Oil, dead skin and daily buildup can collect around the follicles. Cleansing properly before shaving helps prepare the skin and can make the shave feel cleaner and more comfortable.

This is a good example of what purification should be: effective without being aggressive.

When your skin needs more

There are also moments when the skin needs a deeper reset.

Vie de Mer CharMud Balancing Mask combines charcoal with mineral-rich Dead Sea mud and salt to help draw out excess oil, gently exfoliate and clear congested pores.

What sets the formula apart is that purification is not the end of the story. Aloe vera, jojoba oil and vitamin E help leave the skin feeling refreshed and hydrated rather than tight or stripped.

I reach for a mask like this when the complexion looks tired, congested or simply feels like it needs a fresh start.

Knowing when enough is enough

Good skincare is not always about adding another layer.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is cleanse properly, clear what the skin does not need and then give it room to function beautifully again.

This is why I like charcoal. Like charcoal on paper, it is a balance of depth and light, adding and taking away.

And knowing when enough is enough.

Big Hug,
Aida
